What is Ceramic Coating?
High Temperature Coatings are designed to improve the performance of exhaust systems. These coatings prevent corrosion, increase durability and provide thermal insulation. Ceramic coating is an excellent thermal barrier. By doing so, ceramic coating reduces under-hood heat temperatures which will increase horsepower. Ceramic is to be applied on parts that see excessive heat. Ceramic can take temperatures 1600+ degrees. Ceramic is NOT a durable coating. It is designed to be a heat barrier and that is all. It is recommended that parts are installed carefully to avoid scuffing the parts.
The ceramic product we use is the best in the business not something like a VHT spray can, it has been tested to over 2000 degrees without fading or lifting from the parts. It is shown to give up to a 3% power increase by cooling engine bay and engine component temperatures. Ceramic also provides a great look as well as chemical and fuel resistance. It is NOT recommended that ceramic parts be wrapped with a heat wrap after completion. A proper break-in procedure also must be applied to freshly coated parts.
What is Powder Coating?
So you have seen or heard of powder coating before, but you aren’t exactly sure what it is or what the process is? According to the Powder Coating Institute’s web page, “Powder coating is an advanced method of applying a decorative and protective finish to a wide range of materials and products that are used by both industries and consumers. The powder used for the process is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin, which is sprayed onto a surface to be coated. The charged powder particles adhere to the electrically grounded surfaces until heated and fused into a smooth coating in a curing oven. The result is a uniform, durable, high-quality, and attractive finish.”
Why is Powder Coating Better?
Powder coat is an extremely durable finish. It can be applied to consumer, business, and commercial equipment and is more resistant to chipping, fading, scratching, and general wear than traditional paint. Most powder is also formulated to be resistant to oil, grease, fuel, and certain acids. Color selection is virtually endless from primers to wrinkles, to veins, to candies, to illusion colors. Many finishes are not available in paint products and many of the colors don’t contain the depth of a powder coated finish without paying massive dollars from an experienced traditional “wet painter”. Lastly powder is better for the environment. It is a harmless powder that contains no VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) like traditional paint.
What is Powder Coat Used on?
Powder can be applied to anything metal including appliances, furniture, auto parts, marine parts, aeronautical parts, signs, posts, frames, industrial equipment, etc, the list is endless with powder coating.
What is the turnaround time?
This question is very common, the short answer is that it varies. There are times we are booked solid and times we have less scheduled. Most turnaround times are 3-5 day but sometimes parts can take 7- 14 days to be completed depending on workload. It is always best to ask beforehand if you are not sure, and if you are in a rush be sure to schedule an appointment. Winter is the busiest time of year and rush jobs are available at a 33% fee. This means we stop work on everyone else’s parts to complete your parts.
What should I do before I bring my parts in?
All parts must be disassembled prior to bringing them in, this mean all seals, gaskets, rubber, bearings, bushings, etc. All parts must also be free of excessive oil and grease. If they are not, a cleaning charge will be applied to the items. The most common items that need cleaned are ATV parts, valve covers, and oil pans. Some items we can take apart and reassemble for a fee, but be sure to inquire about it beforehand if you do not want to pay the fee.
